• AU Info: The short and sweet of it is that Poe is Force-sensitive.
While this connection has unknowingly aided his skills and abilities throughout his life, it was always on a subliminal level. A latent connection to the Force that never fully blossomed for whatever reason, but resulted in his uncanny luck, enhanced his natural inclination for flying, and gave him a level of battle precognition which further aided him in flight. That all changed when he was taken prisoner by The First Order and interrogated/tortured by Kylo Ren. During this his mind was inadvertently opened to the Force, fully forging his connection to it.
The first time he was truly aware that something had changed in him was when the Hosnian System was destroyed by Starkiller Base, feeling the same disturbance in the Force that others had felt in the past when whole planets of people were slain. Prior to that there had been little signs but Poe had written them off as PTSD (which he was also actively ignoring). Ever since he has been struggling to reconcile the changes in him and what they might mean, especially when he can take little time for himself when the Resistance are being hunted by The First Order.
• It could be theorized that playing on the Force tree outside his home on Yavin 4 as a child, the tree borne from a twig that was the Great Tree which grew in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, influenced/nurtured Poe's connection to the Force.
• Additional assorted notes: He has/will have a natural inclination for defensive abilities; think of him as the shield to another's sword. Also possibly a bit of a 'mimic', in that he tries to copy what he's seen others do (to varying levels of success or lack there of), in part due to being such a late-bloomer to the Force and lacking traditional training or resources.
