He could feel the pilot's thoughts roiling through him and he stopped, turning. "If you prefer to look like a prisoner to them, I can make it so. It is your choice. You will not be though. You are free to leave, you have that choice." He stated, though he was sure the man would remember the deal. If Poe came with him, the others would be spared. Not that Ren would have likely destroyed all of them. He might have left a few, just enough people to take care of his mother, to see to it that she was okay.
The troopers around them started to do as ordered though, retreating back to their ships instead of pursuing the fleeing Resistance. He released Poe's hand, grasping his shoulder instead and looking into his eyes. "I can't promise that we will never go after them again, but we won't now. And I will...never go after my mother. She will always be safe so long as I have a say in it." It was obvious from how he said it, from the hesitance in his mind that these were words he never would have said before.
Before Snoke that is. Before he had killed the former Supreme Leader. Rey still thought he had done it for her, but that wasn't entirely true. Yes part of it had been. He didn't want to kill her and he knew that if he hadn't, Snoke would have and then likely would have turned on him. No, he did it more for himself. He had been tired of the man's ridicule and manipulation. He'd wanted to take his life back.
In the end, he knew Poe actually listened to him and even, possibly, understood him. Or at least, they were connected more than he and Rey ever had been. "Unlike Snoke, I don't want to destroy everything and rebuild the galaxy into some...well. He was worse than the Emperor. He just wanted to subjugate the galaxy. I want to unite the galaxy."
